Cristiano Ronaldo issues defiant Juventus declaration despite Champions League failure

Cristiano Ronaldo has issued a defiant call to arms to his Juventus teammates that all is not lost in their season despite another Champions League failure.

The Italian club slipped out of Europe in disappointing fashion again at the last-16 stage after their shock exit to outsiders Porto over a week ago.

Chelsea would have been their opponents in the next round in a half of the draw which has avoided the competition favourites and signals a huge missed opportunity for the Old Lady.

But Ronaldo is keen not to dwell on their shortcomings and believes Juve can still end the campaign in style.

Speaking as he collected the Serie A Player of the Year award for 2020 this week, the 36-year-old said: "I could not have been happier and more proud of the Player of the Year distinction obtained for the second time since I arrived in Italy.

"Thank you very much for this recognition to the Italian Footballers' Association, Juventus, my team-mates and our fans.

"I would like to promise the whole Juventus universe that we will continue to work until the last day because we can still, all together, have reasons to celebrate this season.

"Until the end!"

Juventus have their work cut out if they are to catch Serie A leaders Inter Milan, who are currently 10 points ahead in the table.

They do have a game in hand over their rivals though, while the two sides meet in the penultimate match of the season in a potential decider if Juve can close the gap.

AC Milan are also still in the mix, who Juve meet the week before they face Inter.

There is still also the Coppa Italia final to come against Atalanta leaving plenty of scope for Ronaldo to land more silverware for the Bianconeri.

Ronaldo's future has been the subject of debate since Juve's Champions League elimination, with reports suggesting he could be making a return to Real Madrid in the summer.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane refused to rule out a potential reunion, with Ronaldo set to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

The Portuguese striker has previously expressed a desire to play on until his 40s, fitness permitting, and he again hinted at the prospect at the awards ceremony.

"The secret is to keep enjoying football. Consistency, confidence in one's own means, work and passion are the secret," Ronaldo added.

"Without them, it is impossible to play at these levels at 34, 35, 36, or 40. You need to be motivated and have great discipline."
