Cristiano Ronaldo is not the problem at Man Utd but would have been Man City's solution

If Cristiano Ronaldo is the problem at Manchester United, I would love to see the solution.

Three late goals from Ronaldo have been worth an extra five points, effectively keeping United afloat in the Champions League.

He is proving, yet again, that he is not just one of the greatest footballers who ever played the game: Even at 36, he is still a difference-maker.

And in the derby against Manchester City at Old Trafford, that could be massive – both in terms of local bragging rights and in the title race.

For United, in their first home game since the abject debacle against Liverpool last month, it will be the biggest test yet of their resolve and quality.

But for City, it could be a tipping point in Pep Guardiola's bid to retain the title without a recognised No.9 in his side.

Only a genius like Pep could undertake a 38-game campaign and try to win the Premier League without a conventional centre forward.

It makes you wonder how the table would look now if City had succeeded in bringing Ronaldo to the Etihad in August before they were gazumped, at the last minute, by United.

And if United – eight points off the pace and three points behind City – are not going to catch leaders Chelsea, they may still have a big say in the title race.

For all the pressure he has been under this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a good record against Pep in the Premier League, winning three and drawing one of their last four meetings.

City are firm favourites with the bookies to win, and they have won four titles since Sir Alex Ferguson retired across town eight years ago to shift the balance of power, but the 186th Manchester derby is not a foregone conclusion.

Guardiola's defence looked vulnerable to the counter-attack in their shock defeat by Crystal Palace last week – and United's strength is on the counter.

City have already conceded more goals in the Champions League group phase than they did in the whole of last season's run to the final.

It will be fascinating to see how Ronaldo fares in his duel with Portugal team-mate Ruben Dias.

And over the next few weeks, the picture should become clearer: Will Pep live to regret missing out on Ronaldo and Harry Kane last summer, or can he win the title without a No.9 in his line-up?

My hunch is that if City had landed Ronaldo in the summer, they would not be trailing Chelsea by five points.

Instead of being a 'problem' fitting him into the side, CR7 is still the one who makes the difference.
