Cristiano Ronaldo heroics not enough as Juventus crash out of Champions League to Lyon

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice but was unable to save Juventus from a Champions League exit at the hands of Lyon.

A Memphis Depay penalty gave Lyon the lead on the night in Turin, and doubled their advantage from the first leg.

Ronaldo then struck either side of half-time, but was unable to find the third goal his side needed.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg back in February, and having only played in one competitive match since coronavirus saw Ligue 1 being curtailed early, it took the French side less than 10 minutes to stun their hosts.

Houssem Aouar raced into the Juve box and was caught by Rodrigo Bentancur, although the contact did seem to be minimal and rather late.

It was still enough for a penalty to be awarded though, and Depay clipped his effort down the middle and past Wojciech Szczesny.

The Dutchman was then involved in Juve's equaliser shortly before the break when he was harshly judged to have handled from a Miralem Pjanic free-kick.

Ronaldo rolled home the penalty to set up a grand second half, with the Italian champions needing two more goals.

They got one back on the hour mark when Ronaldo took aim from distance with his left foot and saw his effort beat the despairing dive of Anthony Lopes to make it 2-1 on the night.

But any thought that that would inspire a stunning comeback and victory for Juve proved to be short-lived, as Lyon impressively held their own in the second period.

Juve pressed for a late winner, and weren't helped by substitute Paulo Dybala pulling up injured within seconds of coming on, with the French outfit able to see it out and earn a spot in the last eight where they will face Manchester City.
