Cristiano Ronaldo has given Ralf Rangnick a difficult Manchester United decision to make

There's no doubt that Manchester United supporters took notice of Cristiano Ronaldo's explosive interview with Sky Sports, and it certainly gave an insight into the problems around the dressing room.

He questioned whether some of his teammates had the right mentality to succeed and step up to another level, which spoke volumes.

He said: "I say we have a long way to improve because, for me, the most important thing is the mentality. To look at yourself and say, 'I can do better.'

"For you to be professional, help the team, the right mentality, self-taught and positive. All these details depend on you, not the coaches, the fans or the press. If you are proud of yourself and you have dignity, you have to do it much more.

Most United fans were pleased Ronaldo came out and said it how it is. Many have grown fed up with players moaning and not giving their all in a red shirt, and it's clear the 36-year-old feels the standards have dropped at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo has been sensational since re-signing for United, and it's hard to imagine where the club would be without his services this season. His 14 goals and two assists in 22 games have been pivotal in Ralf Rangnick's team still being able to compete, despite the poor overall team performances.

United would be out of the Champions League if it weren't for Ronaldo, and it sometimes feels there's an evident gulf in class compared to the other players regarding mentality. He didn't become one of the greatest players of all time by sitting on his backside - hard work and determination got him to where he is.

He's won it all as a player, be it five Ballon d'Or's, five Champions League titles, the Premier League or Serie A. Ronaldo has a winning mentality. Because some of United's current players haven't won anything, it makes you wonder whether he should be given the captain's armband.

When you think about everything he's won in his career, plus the fact he's a United legend and was part of some of the best years under Sir Alex Ferguson, there is a strong case that Rangnick should make him the new captain because he gets what it means to play for the club. We shouldn't be competing for fourth. We should be challenging for trophies, and at the moment, the club are miles away from that.

The current captain, Harry Maguire, has been off the pace this season and hasn't looked like the outstanding player for United in defence in 2020/21. It's pretty apparent he's been one of the poorer performers in a red shirt so far, and there have been calls for him to be dropped.

It's also led to people wondering whether he's captain material. I'm not going to be one to question his mentality because he's a good defender that's just going through a lousy run-of-form. But I can understand why people want him to be dropped and have the captaincy taken off him - if you look at United's captain's in the past, a lot of them never fell in their performance levels and always gave everything on the pitch.

Rangnick has a difficult decision because, as we've seen recently, there is dressing room unrest in the United squad, and switching captaincy's midway through the season has the potential to cause further damage. Some players look up to Maguire, and relationships could become fractious if the team leader changes.

This is why Rangnick has a tough decision to make. Does he give the captain's armband to the obvious candidate? Or does he wait until the end of the season to prevent further damage to the team?

You would probably stick with Maguire until the end of the season before making a change, but I can see why some supporters would demand Ronaldo to be made captain now as it could change the fortunes in what's been a disappointing season.

Either way, Ronaldo should be getting the armband at some point, and it'll be interesting to see what Rangnick does because it's a choice that only he can make.
