Cristiano Ronaldo hailed as 'back to his best' for Man United as Raphael Varane also rewarded

Cristiano Ronaldo has been told he is "back to his best" after notching a goal and an assist for Manchester United against Tottenham at the weekend.

A sorry Spurs side were thumped 3-0, with Ronaldo beating Hugo Lloris on the edge of the six-yard box with a fine first-time volley before the break.

He then provided for Edinson Cavani as the Urugyuan scored his first goal of the season by deftly chipping over the on-rushing France shot-stopper.

It ended a spell of four Premier League games without a win as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made a tactical adjustment that saw him utilise three central defenders and in doing so claimed a first clean sheet in over two months.

Alan Shearer named Ronaldo in his Premier League team of the week alongside Varane who also emphasised his importance to the squad as he made a winning return.

“Back to his very best with a sublime volley when Man Utd needed him most. Not many players could have scored that. Also provided an assist for Cavani," Shearer said lauding Ronaldo on the Premier League's official website.

The former Real Madrid defender was making his first appearance since France's involvement in the Nations League Final, having picked up a groin injury that led to his absence in the defeats to Leicester City and Liverpool.

He added: “Man Utd needed a commanding defensive display and Varane provided it as his side eased to their victory at Spurs."
