Cristiano Ronaldo escapes red card after petulant kick at Liverpool player

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo controversially escaped a red card in first half stoppage time of his side’s game with Liverpool after angrily lashing out at Curtis Jones.

With Jurgen Klopp’s side coasting at 3-0 ahead of the break, the frustrated Portuguese international, who had just seen a shot saved by Alisson, kicked the Reds’ home-grown hero before having a second nibble at the young Scouser as he lay on the Old Trafford turf.

The angry flashpoint prompted a finger-wagging Andy Robertson and Virgil van Dijk to come over and remonstrate with the Dutchman appearing to chest bump Ronaldo before being pushed away by Bruno Fernandes, who also received a shove in the back from Ibrahima Konate as tempers flared between the old foes.

Referee Anthony Taylor from Wythenshawe in Greater Manchester might have sent the 36-year-old off for violent conduct but instead chose only to show him the yellow card.

Goals from Naby Keita, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah had put Liverpool in command while Salah added a fourth for the visitors before the interval.
