Cristiano Ronaldo dropped by Andrea Pirlo for make-or-break Champions League fixture

Cristiano Ronaldo was dropped by Andrea Pirlo for Juventus' final game of the season - which they must win to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Juve boss Pirlo benched Ronaldo for Sunday's trip to Bologna - reportedly as a "technical decision" rather than because of injury.

And the move has fuelled speculation the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star could be on his way out of the club this summer.

The 36-year-old has been linked with a sensational return to Old Trafford as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to turn his side into Premier League title contenders next season.

And there have also been rumours that mega-rich Paris Saint-Germain could make a move for Ronaldo after Mauricio Pochettino's side crashed out of the Champions League at the semi-final stage.

Juventus face Bologna on Sunday night in a make-or-break clash for their hopes of returning to Europe's top club competition next season, with the Old Lady heading into the game in fifth place in Serie A.

The Turin giants need to win Sunday's game and hope that either AC Milan or Napoli drop points in their matches against Atalanta and Hellas Verona respectively.

And the fact that Pirlo has left one of world football's superstars on the bench for such a huge clash could have huge significance for Ronaldo's future.

And the Portuguese ace appears unlikely to stay in Turin in any case if they are competing in the Europa League next season.

According to Italian football expert Fabrizio Romano, Ronaldo is is "not injured" and was left on the bench due to a “technical decision” from Pirlo.

Ronaldo was signed by Juventus for £105million in 2017 in the hope he could help bring the club European Cup glory.

But they have crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage for the past two seasons, having exited in the quarter-finals in Ronaldo's first campaign in Italy.

There has long been speculation that Ronaldo could move back to Manchester United at some stage, having made his name at Old Trafford before becoming a global brand at the Bernabeu.

According to reports in the Spanish press , he is serious about returning to the Premier League and is willing to take a pay cut to facilitate the move.
