Cristiano Ronaldo could be forced to wear two different shirt numbers for Man Utd

Cristiano Ronaldo is known globally for his iconic No.7 shirt.

But his fairytale return to Manchester United poses a problem - the number aligned with his CR7 brand is not currently available.

Uruguayan Edinson Cavani still holds the historic No.7 shirt, and Premier League regulations mean it is unlikely Ronaldo will be able to take it from him in domestic competition.

Whilst Cavani has not yet played in the Premier League this term, his No.7 squad number has been registered and now cannot be changed during this season unless he departs.

There is a possibility of the Premier League granting special dispensation for a change, but that has never happened before meaning Ronaldo may be forced to find another number.

However, in the Champions League, squad lists and number have not yet been submitted.

And that means Ronaldo could theoretically be handed the No.7 shirt in European competition whilst wearing a different number in the Premier League.

The unusual scenario occurred when Henrikh Mkhitaryan played for Arsenal and wore No.7 in the Premier League and No.77 in the Europa League.

The same has happened at Manchester United before, too, with Wes Brown wearing No.30 in the Champions League and No.24 in the Premier League in 1998/99.

Football shirts sales are a big business, and with clubs nowadays selling shirts with different fonts to match Premier League and Champions League styles, two numbers for Ronaldo could be a lucrative opportunity.

However, it may well be that he opts for an alternative squad number for both competitions as Cavani keeps the No.7.

Cavani’s agent and brother has confirmed that the Uruguayan has no plans to leave United despite speculation over his future.

South American journalist Andre Hernan tweeted: "Walter Guglielmone, brother of Cavani, assured me that no one from Corinthians or intermediaries sought him out for anything.

"He reiterates that Cavani still has one year of contract in England." Cristiano Ronaldo could wear different shirt numbers for Man Utd in Premier League and Champions League
