Cristiano Ronaldo and Jose Mourinho's ultimate humiliation and response they must repeat

Barcelona inflicted a 5-0 defeat upon fierce rivals Real Madrid in their 2010 El Clasico clash in what is one of the most iconic football matches this century.

For Cristiano Ronaldo, this match was the heaviest defeat of his career before it was equalled when Man United were humiliated by Liverpool in the same scoreline on Monday.

In a statistical quirk, the chastening experience at the Camp Nou was also the heaviest defeat of Jose Mourinho ’s coaching career – spanning 1,008 matches – until his Roma crashed to a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt on Thursday, three days before Ronaldo and United suffered defeat by the same margin.

Ronaldo and Mourinho are both leaders and they will each be looking to draw from the experience of what both are likely to have considered their darkest day, almost 11 years ago.

Of course, the manner of the defeats to Liverpool and Bodo/Glimt respectively were significantly more concerning than losing to a Barca side who are widely acknowledged as the greatest club side of the modern era.

Yet both figures have built their successes on a reputation of being relentless winners and their ability to perform at their best – either on or off the pitch – for the biggest matches.

Ronaldo and Mourinho had shared that match at the Camp Nou as their biggest defeat of their careers to date with both looking to draw on the aftermath of that game to spur them on in the weeks to come.

Impressively, Real Madrid went on an eight-match winning streak after their Camp Nou humiliation; winning their next five games in La Liga and each of their next clashes in the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Mourinho’s side notched up league wins over Valencia, Real Zaragoza, Sevilla, Getafe and Villarreal – meaning they sat on a whopping 47 points after just 18 matches, before being held at Almeria.

RECORD: Jose Mourinho's five worst defeats after Roma are hit for six

They defeated Levante 8-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey while rounding off their Champions League group stage with 4-0 wins over both Ajax and Auxerre respectively.

The loss at Barca was one of just four league defeats suffered by Madrid the entire season, in which they racked up 92 points, while also falling short to their rivals in the Champions League semi-final – losing 3-1 on aggregate.

Mourinho’s men did enjoy some success that season – an extra-time goal from Ronaldo saw them edge out Barca 1-0 in the final of the Copa del Rey.

Despite missing out on the league title, they broke the record in La Liga for goals scored in a season (102) and netted a remarkable 147 goals across all competitions that campaign.

Ronaldo and Mourinho will be looking for similar responses from their sides following recent humiliations and unprecedented defeats.

Man Utd are away to Tottenham in the Premier League on Saturday while Roma returned to action over the weekend with a 0-0 draw against Serie A leaders Napoli before a midweek trip to Cagliari.
