Cristiano Ronaldo advisors blamed for interview and Roy Keane support questioned

Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe believes that Cristiano Ronaldo has been advised poorly following his interview with Piers Morgan.

Last Sunday Morgan announced that he had sat down with Ronaldo for a bombshell interview on TalkTV. In the clips and latterly the full conversation which was aired on Wednesday and Thursday, Ronaldo proceeded to criticise United, Erik ten Hag, the Glazers and former teammates like Wayne Rooney and Gary Neville.

Since the interview, United have released a statement saying that they are looking at 'appropriate steps' to deal with Ronaldo. MEN Sport understands that the Reds are looking into the possibility of potentially sacking the 37-year-old.

Speaking to OLBG, Sharpe believes that Ronaldo is in the wrong. "Ronaldo has certainly caused a storm in a teacup," he explained.

"Ronaldo was not right to do the interview while still under contract and being paid by Manchester United. He was not right to do the interview with Piers Morgan.

"It has not worked out for him, I know he has a bit of a grievance and stuff he wants to get off his chest, but he has not been advised well. It was not a good decision."

While Ronaldo hit back at Rooney and Neville for criticising him, he thanked the likes of Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand for their support. Sharpe however is unsure how long the Irishman can carry on supporting Ronaldo.

"Roy Keane is a big fan of Ronaldo because he knows how many goals he can score and what he can do on the pitch," Sharpe added. "If Ronaldo played more games and was match-fit, he would probably score more goals so I can see where Keane is coming from. But it will be difficult for Keane to be on Ronaldo's side after his criticism of the club.

"Ronaldo may have a point with the old facilities and chefs, but Ronaldo won't be there long enough to worry about things like that, he needs to set standards and an example to the players and club and to try to reach a level the club has not been at for 10-15 years. You just don't criticise the chef, whose been there for years, and the facilities, that talk is kept in the dressing room, it shouldn't come out to the news when you're an employee of the club."
