Cristiano Ronaldo admits Manchester United surprise after second debut vs Newcastle

By Kieran King

Newcastle United suffered their third Premier League defeat of the season as Cristiano Ronaldo produced an inspired performance to earn Manchester United a convincing victory.

Javier Manquillo did give the Magpies a lifeline when he equalised in the 56th minute with a well-taken strike after Ronaldo had opened the scoring.

But the Red Devils turned on the style, with the ex-Juventus man sealing his brace before Bruno Fernandes and Jesse Lingard wrapped up the three points at Old Trafford.

Although the result proved to be disappointing, Steve Bruce seemed to be optimistic about his side's performance, especially during the first-half.

Newcastle kept Man Utd quiet for a large majority of the opening period, before Ronaldo pounced on an error from Freddie Woodman to give the hosts the lead.

The Portuguese forward returned to the club from Juventus on deadline day and was making his second debut, 12 years after initially leaving the club for Real Madrid.

In his post-match interview, Ronaldo admitted that he had two surprises from their win over Newcastle.

“I didn’t expect to score two goals," he told BBC Sport. "I expected one but not two. I have to appreciate the fans and what they did to me today. I feel so proud for that.

“The most important thing was to win and to win games. Manchester [United] needs to be where they deserve. It is to win, to build the team and build the club and the mentality.

“This is what we are looking for. Of course I am happy to score goals I am not going to deny that but the most important thing is the team and the team played good."
