Cristian Romero issues emotional transfer message as Tottenham announcement edges closer

Tottenham transfer target Cristian Romero has issued an emotional message thanking Atalanta as he edges close to a move to Spurs.

The Argentine defender sealed a permanent move to the Bergamo-based side on Friday afternoon, with Serie A giants Juventus confirming that Atalanta had activated a clause his loan deal.

His switch was confirmed via a short statement as a mere formality ahead of a permanent move to Spurs, which is set to take place in the coming days. football.london understands that a fee has been agreed between the two clubs, with Romero having already flown into London to complete the switch.

Whilst a deal has yet to be formally announced, Romero has all-but confirmed the move already by saying goodbye to his current employers with an emotional statement published on his official Instagram account.

He wrote: "Unfortunately the day has come that I never thought could come so soon. I say unfortunately because in Atalanta I found more than just a club, but a real family with which I was able to grow and fulfil some of my dreams as a child such as playing and winning with my national team.

"I thank the Percassi family who believed in me more than anyone a year ago, all my teammates, the coach, all the staff and managers. But above all I want to greet the Bergamo fans because they made me feel at home and welcomed me as one of them.

"I am sure that one day we will meet again and I promise you that you will have one more fan who will follow you in every match. Thanks for everything @atalantabc."

Despite having only played for the club for a year, the 23-year-old suitably impressed in his limited appearances, forging a reputation as one of the best defenders in the top-flight of Italian football.

That is a huge reason why Fabio Paratici has pushed for a deal and Romero is set to become Spurs’ third signing of the summer following former Atalanta teammate Pierluigi Gollini and Bryan Gil.
