Romero, Lo Celso, Doherty - Latest Tottenham injury news ahead of Newcastle clash

Nuno Espirito Santo is set to welcome back his squad to north London ahead of Tottenham's clash with Newcastle United.

Spurs travel to face the Magpies on Sunday afternoon, with the Tyneside-based club on a high after Mike Ashley finally sold the club after 14 years at St James' Park.

Ahead of the game, a number of Spurs players have been overseeing their international commitments in what has been a pretty injury-hit campaign for the north-London outfit.

The break has allowed those currently missing from the Tottenham squad to continue their battle to get back to full fitness. However, there is some bad news for Espirito Santo to negotiate, with a number of his south American contingent not yet having returned to north London.

football.london takes a look at the current injury state of the Spurs squad as the return of Premier League action approaches.

Steven Bergwijn

Bergwijn has taken his time to recover, having sustained an injury during the last round of international fixtures.

The Netherlands international's last outing for Tottenham was their European clash with French team Rennes, where he picked up a foot problem.

When speaking about the Dutch winger prior to the North London Derby clash with Arsenal, Espirito Santo was unable to put a time frame on when he could return to action but said he is doing some work in order to recover.

"I think I explained the injury he has is very painful so he has to settle down," the Tottenham boss said. "He has not totally stopped. He is doing some fitness, some upper body. For now, he is not available."

He was of course been left out of the latest Netherlands squad.

Ryan Sessegnon

Meanwhile, Sessegnon has also been missing for a few weeks after the winger picked up an injury while on international duty with England's under-21 team.

The 21-year-old, who was linked with an exit from north London over the summer transfer window, will be hoping to return to action sooner rather than later, but Espirito Santo was unable to tell the media when he would be back when speaking about him earlier in the month.

He said: "We don't know [when he will return]. They are improving, day by day."

Ben Davies

Davies withdrew from the Wales squad due to illness earlier in the week.

"Ben Davies and David Brooks have had to withdraw from the squad due to illness. Brysiwch wella hogia! (get well soon)," read a tweet on the official Wales Twitter account.

As it is not an injury, his return date is unknown.

Matt Doherty

The latest to be struck down by injury, the former Wolves man had to be withdrawn at half-time during the Republic of Ireland's 4-0 thumping of Qatar. He was replaced by Cyrus Christie.

At the time of writing, there is currently no indication over the severity of his injury.

Cristian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso

Whilst not injured per say, the Argentine duo could well be huge doubts for the game against the Magpies.

The reason for that is that their nation is set to take on Peru less than three days before kick-off at St James' Park.

They would still be required to fly back in time for the game and it could well be too much of a squeeze to get the two prepared in time.

Emerson Royal

Another of the South American contingent to have his participation thrown into doubt, Emerson is part of the Brazil squad set to take on Uruguay.

His time period to get back is even smaller than that of Romero and Lo Celso so he could be left out, although with Doherty's fitness up in the air, Emerson could potentially be rushed into the side.

Davinson Sanchez

The final Spurs player not expected to return under three days before kick-off against Newcastle, Sanchez's Colombia are scheduled to play Ecuador in Barranquilla on Thursday evening.

He too will be back late, leaving his participation at St James' Park in doubt.
