Cristhian Mosquera: Crystal Palace face new rival for key summer transfer target

Crystal Palace are set to face competition from Atletico Madrid for 19-year-old summer transfer target Cristhian Mosquera.

The Eagles made an approach for the highly-rated centre-back in January, but other clubs in Europe and the Premier League are also tracking him.

Mosquera has not missed a minute of Valencia’s last 21 La Liga matches and made his debut for Spain Under-21s last week.

This month, an appearances-based clause in his Valencia contract was triggered, extending his deal until June 2026. But Mosquera is still considering his options.

Atletico Madrid are now understood to be keen on making a summer move for Mosquera, who they hope can be lured to the Spanish capital by a huge increase to his modest wages.

Diego Simeone’s side are planning defensive signings this summer, with Aston Villa in pole position to sign their 28-year-old centre-back Mario Hermoso as a free agent.

Palace, meanwhile, are braced for bids for England centre-back Marc Guehi, who could leave Selhurst Park this summer.

Palace sporting director Dougie Freedman began sifting through potential replacements months ago, with Palace scouts travelling to Spain to watch Mosquera in December.

Another defender of interest to Palace is 20-year-old Ronnie Edwards.

Peterborough have already rejected three separate bids by the Eagles for Edwards, who West Ham and Swansea tried to sign last summer.

Palace first tried to sign Edwards for £15million two years ago, but Peterborough have since been relegated to League One, meaning Edwards would be available for less.
