Crisis hit Wigan hammer Hull 8-0 in shock DW Stadium drubbing - with seven goals scored in the first half

Wigan Athletic recorded an amazing 8-0 win tonight as they sent out a huge statement in their bid to stay in the Championship.

The Latics, who went into administration earlier this month, recorded their record league win and equalled the record Championship win as they thrashed fellow relegation threatened Hull City at the DW Stadium.

It was raining goals from the moment Kal Naismith gave them the lead after just two minutes.

Kieffer Moore and Kieran Dowell both grabbed two goals and Jamal Lowe and Joe Williams one apiece as Paul Cook's men raced into an incredible 7-0 half-time lead.

They became the first side in the top four tiers of English football to score seven or more goals in one half since Watford v Blackpool, also in the Championship, in January 2015.

At one point it appeared they could get into double figures with the all-time record league win of 13-0 set by Newcastle in 1946, even looking under threat.

However Kieran Dowell completing his hat-trick with a wonderful finish just after the hour mark was the only goal added in what was a comparatively tame second period.

However it meant the Latics had beaten their record league win of 7-0 against Oxford in 2017 and also matched the Championship record win, set by Bournemouth when they thrashed Brimingham 8-0 in 2014.

It leaves Hull mired in relegation trouble and was vital for Latics' own hopes of staying in division.

They currently sit 13th in the table with 57 points they but will be deducted 12 points for going into administration if they finish outside the bottom three, meaning they are now effectively level on points with Hull on 45, and would still be clear of the relegation zone on goal difference.

Manager Paul Cook described last week as "the worst, toughest week of my career by far."

The club were plunged into administration earlier after owner Au Yeung Wai Kay.

The circumstances leading up to the decision are now subject of an enquiry.

Around 75 support staff have already been redundant as administrators try to find a buyer for the club.

Whilst Cook and his players have only received around 20 percent of their monthly salaries after they were paid late on Monday.
