Crisis-hit Addiewell prison appoints third new governor in a month

Crisis-hit Addiewell prison has put a new governor in charge of the jail – the third in a month.

Trevor Shortt has been appointed as interim director of the privately-run facility in West Lothian.

It follows the departure of former governor Ian Whitehead last month. His deputy, Emma Stuart, was in temporary charge but has returned to her original role.

Whitehead resigned from his job at HMP Addiewell – managed by Sodexo Justice Services – days after prisoners staged a protest at conditions caused by a staff shortage.

A female officer quit her job the same week after failing a drugs test. Five trainees also left their posts in October after failing tests.

Tony Simpson, director of UK Custodial Operations at Sodexo, said: “While we recruit a permanent replacement, Trevor Shortt, our current director of Community Operations and an experienced prison director, will take up post as interim prison director at Addiewell.”

Shortt last week claimed under-fire Addiewell was a “high performing establishment”.
