Criminals are using blowtorches to break into people's homes - here's how to protect your family

There has been a spike in criminals using blow torches to break into homes.

Crooks have been using the tool to burn through the lock area of uPVC doors, causing enough damage to snap or bend the lock, or remove it entirely.

Police in Stockport say there has been an increase in the number of blowtorch burglaries happening across the borough.

The force now is advising homeowners about how to keep their properties safe, but says locks that conform to British standards should be able to withstand a blowtorch attack.

It says TS 007 (one star or three star) locks and SS312 (Sold Secure Diamond Standard for lock cylinders) both meet this standard.

It is also advising homeowners to install 'sash jammers' on their doors and windows to help thwart potential attacks.

GMP has issued a warning amid a spate of 'blowtorch' break ins across Stockport (Stockport Crimewatch)

Police said: "It is important to make sure that your lock is offering the most protection for your property.

"Anyone buying a new lock should ensure it has earned either a Three Star TS007 rating or a SS312 rating. There are some locks which have earned both of these.

"Cylinder locks are easily replaced and do not necessarily require a professional to fit them, as long as the lock is measured correctly, and once fitted it should not protrude.

"If you know who installed your doors, ask for confirmation that your cylinder locks conform to either TS 007 or SS312 standards.

"If your locks conform to standards and are Kite-marked, then there is evidence to suggest they would withstand a blowtorch attack.

"As an extra step sash jammers are also a great way to better protect yourself from burglary.

"Sash jammers are easy to fit and operate and can help provide extra security for both uPVC doors and windows."
