Criminal on Netflix: Everything you need to know about the tense new thriller

Netflix’s new series Criminal might be its most ambitious yet.

The streaming service has just unveiled an intriguing trailer for the new crime anthology series, which will arrive online later this month.

Thanks to its unique setting and international scope, Criminal is not your average police procedural.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of its release...

What is Criminal all about?

(Netflix)

The series is a police thriller with a difference, taking place exclusively within the confines of a police interview suite.

The claustrophobic setting puts the focus on the shifting power dynamic between officers and the suspects, and promises to be an extremely intense watch.

As Netflix explains: “Psychological games abound between detectives and suspects in a tense interrogation room, where the search for answers sometimes comes at a moral cost.

“Criminal is a police procedural with a unique premise: it takes place exclusively within the confines of a police interview suite.

(Netflix)

“This stripped down, cat-and-mouse drama will focus on the intense mental conflict between the police officer and the suspect in question.”

Each of the dozen episodes will deal with a different case, with the stories set in four different countries: France, Spain, Germany and the UK. There will be three episodes in each of the four languages.

George Kay, who has previously worked on Killing Eve and The Hour, and Endeavour’s Jim Field Smith have overseen the entire series as showrunners.

Who stars in Criminal?

Thanks to its global scope, the series boasts a sprawling cast. The UK edition features Katherine Kelly (Cheat), Lee Ingleby (George Gently) and Nicholas Pinnock (Marcella) as regular characters alongside Line of Duty’s Rochenda Sandall, Mark Stanley and Subham Saraf.

Broadchurch’s David Tennant and Avengers star Hayley Atwell will also appear as guest stars.

When is Criminal on Netflix?

All 12 episodes of the series will arrive on the streaming service on September 20.
