Criminal investigation launched over pollution in River Irwell

A criminal investigation has been launched after a 'pollution incident' in the River Irwell in Salford.

Environment Agency officers were called to Clifton Country Park in Swinton on Tuesday after 'being made aware of a potential pollution incident'.

The cause of the 'pollution' began being investigated and agency workers started trying to 'ensure environmental impacts are minimised'.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency told the Manchester Evening News : “Our officers were responding to an incident yesterday involving potential pollution on the River Irwell downstream of Clifton Country Park in Swinton, Manchester.

"We have identified the likely source and are working with the site owner to ensure the river is protected and the pollution is contained.

“No fish or wildlife appear to have been affected, but we will continue to monitor the situation closely.”

The incident is now 'subject to a criminal investigation', preventing the agency from releasing any further details, it says.

The agency added: "Thanks to those who reported this to our incident hotline 0800 80 70 60."
