Criminal Assets Bureau detain 10 vehicles in West Dublin car dealership for suspected tax breaches

The Criminal Assests Bureau have seized 10 vehicles in a West Dublin car dealership this afternoon.

The vehicles, taken from a premises in the Palmerstown area, were seized for suspected breaches of the vehicle registration tax legislation.

A spokesperson for the CAB said: "CAB exercising its customs powers conducted an inspection on a garage premises today in the Palmerstown area of Dublin.

"10 vehicles were detained under Section 140 of the Finance Act 2001 for suspected breaches of the vehicle registration tax (VRT) legislation."

It is not the first time CAB have targeted car dealerships in West Dublin.

In 2018, CAB launched a raid on a family run motor dealership in West Dublin and seized 10 high value luxury SUVs.

It is believed that CAB are targeting dealerships who they suspect are involved in passing through drug money.

A source told Dublin Live: "CAB are chasing the assets of criminals and of course their methods of money laundering.

"One of the key areas for them is car dealerships who they suspect are involved in passing through drug money to clean it.

"As we have heard in the past, Limerick criminals as well as the Kinahan and Byrne Organised Crime Groups have all been involved in the motor business.

"Using VRT legislation is all about using the law available there and the best tool to get at these suspects - there is always more than one way to get at the gangsters."

A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana said: "The Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) conducted an inspection of a Motor Company in the Palmerstown area of Dublin today Thursday 1st August to examine company records and conduct a full stock control.

"During the inspection, 10 vehicles were detained under Section 140 of the Finance Act 2001 for suspected breaches of the Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) legislation.

"No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing."
