Netflix has unveiled the trailer for Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel, an upcoming true-crime documentary investigating the 2013 death of 21-year-old Canadian student Elisa Lam.

The programme comes from Joe Berlinger, who directed the true-crime docu-series Paradise Lost about the West Memphis Three case, as well as Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, released on Netflix in January 2019.

Berlinger also directed the 2019 biographical film Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile starring Zac Efron as Bundy.

As reflected in Tuesday’s trailer, Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel examines the many theories that took hold after Lam’s body was discovered in a water supply tank on the roof of the hotel.

The trailer includes excerpts from surveillance footage of Lam in a lift prior to her disappearance. The video has been a source of speculation online and has fuelled many of the theories surrounding Lam’s death.

Earlier this month, Berlinger told The Independent of the footage: “It’s strange and seemingly inexplicable.

“The enigmatic nature of the video is really what drew many people around the world, including me, to become passionate about the case and want to solve its mysteries.”

Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel will air on Netflix on 10 February.
