Witnesses have described the desperate aftermath of a collision between a bus and a young woman who appeared to be trying to cross the road.
The woman is believed to have been crossing Smithdown Road from the side by Archbishop Blanch School at the time of the collision at 7.20pm on Saturday, April 3.
She is understood to have been with her husband at the time.
The ECHO understands the woman appeared to step out, as if to begin crossing the road towards the junction with Cullen Street, before being struck almost immediately and dragged several yards towards the junction with Greenleaf Street.
The victim, in her 30s, was trapped underneath the Stagecoach service where she remained until firefighters managed to free her body more than an hour later.
Witnesses described the man with the victim shouting for people to help "my wife".
One witness, who was driving home and came across the scene seconds later, said they had not been able to "get it out of my mind" since Saturday.
They told the ECHO: "There was a man walking across the road, saying 'is she okay?'.
"The bus driver had his head in his hands and just didn’t look. I think he knew the woman wouldn’t have survived.
"I got out my car and the lady’s husband was standing in shock, I don’t think he could talk.
"The guy who was crossing the road, asking was the lady okay, was shouting for everyone to help get the bus off her.
"That’s when everyone started to try and tip it.
"It felt like ages, but I don’t think it was."
They added: "At one point everyone stopped trying to tip the bus and the husband was trying by himself and crying, so everyone started to help again."
The witness, whose car was trapped behind the emergency service cordon, said at one stage around 100 people were involved in trying to tip the bus.
They described it as "some comfort" to see "strangers, who don’t know each other or the victim, pulling together in attempt to save a life."
The victim, who is understood to have children and live close to the scene of the collision, was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for Stagecoach said: "Our immediate thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died.
"We are assisting the police in any way that we can to help them establish the circumstances involved in the incident and we are also providing welfare support to our driver.”
Merseyside Police said the woman's next of kin are being supported by specially trained officers.
