Cricket World Cup hit by second successive washout as Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka clash abandoned due to rain

The Cricket World Cup suffered its second successive washout on Tuesday as the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

After the toss was delayed due to inclement weather conditions at the Bristol County Ground, the prospect of play never looked likely as the rain continued to fall.

The contest was eventually called off shortly before 2pm BST, three-and-a-half hours after play was supposed to begin, with both teams awarded a point.

It was the same story in Southampton on Monday, when South Africa saw their hopes of qualification for the semi-finals further damaged as their meeting with the West Indies at the Ageas Bowl was rained off after just 7.3 overs.

Sri Lanka, who now sit fifth in the group stage standings, will feel particularly aggrieved, with their contest against Pakistan - also in Bristol - abandoned on Friday due to persistent rain.

It remains to be seen how much cricket will be played this week with more rain forecast over the coming days.

Australia are due to face Pakistan at Taunton on Wednesday, before unbeaten teams India and New Zealand go head to head at Trent Bridge 24 hours later.

Hosts England are scheduled to play their next fixture against the West Indies in Southampton on Friday.
