Cricket World Cup: Bristol Airbnb rentals set for £800,000 lift

Airbnb hosts across Bristol are to pocket more than £800,000 in rentals – thanks to the arrival of the Cricket World Cup in the city.

Cricket fans from across the world are flocking to the city for three matches at the Bristol County Ground as part of the ICC Cricket World Cup.

Research by Airbnb says hosts across the city will collectively earn more than £800,000 in rentals as a result of welcoming fans into their homes to watch the sporting fixtures. Properties available ranged from an entire flat in Clifton for £89 a night to a ‘funky’ garden maisonette in Redland from £65 a night.

Hadi Moussa, general manager for Northern Europe at Airbnb, said: “Airbnb has a unique ability to help areas accommodate a surge in demand around major sports events, enabling residents to make extra money, while acting as ambassadors for their city and communities.

“For those visiting Bristol for the first time, we hope that they’ll be motivated by their experiences with local hosts to come back again and again, ensuring a sustainable and long-term economic impact for the city.”

The first match at the county ground was on June 1 where Australia beat Afghanistan.

Pakistan is due to take on on Sri Lanka today - and Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are set to go head to head on Tuesday, June 11.

The three fixtures will double the number of Men’s World Cup games the ground has held, following one in 1983 and two in 1999.

More recently, the Bristol County Ground hosted eight fixtures at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2017, including England’s dramatic semi-final win over South Africa.

The ground was built in 1889, and was bought by WG Grace.
