Cricket World Cup 2023: NZ vs NED | Kiwis ride on Santner’s allround show, makes it two in two

Mitchell Santner registered his maiden five-wicket haul in the World Cup as New Zealand notched up a commanding 99-run win over The Netherlands at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on Monday.

After posting 322 for seven on a slow track, Santner spun a web around the Dutch batters as the Kiwis recorded their second consecutive win.

In Netherlands’ chase, Vikramjit Singh and Bas de Leede, who scored half-centuries against Pakistan, fell cheaply. Colin Ackermann waged a lone battle, scoring a 73-ball 69 as the team folded up for 223 in 46.3 overs.

Santner was easily the pick of the New Zealand bowlers, the left-arm spinner picking up his second five-for in ODIs and finishing with impressive figures of 10-0-59-5. He accounted for Max O’Dowd, Ackermann, Scott Edwards, Roelof van der Merwe and Ryan Klien.

Matt Henry, Rachin Ravindra and Trent Boult also kept the Netherlands batters on a leash.

After the Kiwis were asked to bat, opener Will Young, No. 3 Ravindra and skipper Tom Latham scored fifties to push the total past the 300-mark. It wasn’t easy as the New Zealand top-order was tested by the probing Dutch attack. Devon Conway and Young forged a 67-run opening stand before the former was dismissed. Young (70, 80b, 7x4, 2x6) made amends for the duck against England in the opening game by giving impetus to the innings.

The New Zealand batters adapted to the slowness of the surface and paced their innings well. Ravindra (51, 51b, 3x4, 1x6) continued his fine form and forged a 77-run partnership for the second wicket with Young.

Daryl Mitchell (48, 47b, 5x4, 2x6) and Latham were involved in a brisk 53-run stand before Santner’s unbeaten 17-ball 36 (3x4, 2x6) beefed up the total.

The left-armer then took the ball and produced a telling spell.
