Cricket World Cup 2019: Eoin Morgan claims 'Allah was with us' after England triumph over New Zealand

Eoin Morgan claims “Allah was with us” after England triumphed over New Zealand in a thrilling super over to win the Cricket World Cup

The captain reacted after a dramatic final saw both sides score 241 from 50 overs, with both sides then posting 15 runs in the additional over each.

But by virtue of scoring more boundary fours and sixes – 26 to New Zealand’s 17 – over the course of the entire match, England clinched glory by the slimmest of margins.

And Morgan, who is born in Dublin, Ireland, has hailed the diversity of the team, sharing an exchange between himself and Adil Rashid.

“We had Allah with us as well,” remarked Morgan.

“I spoke to Adil and he said, ‘Allah was definitely with us’.

“I said we had the run of the green. Actually it epitomises our team. It’s one with quite diverse backgrounds, cultures and people growing up in different countries.

“They’re at the stage in their careers, to actually find humour in the situation we were in at the time is pretty cool.”

Before the super over, Morgan revealed the emphasis was to enjoy the moment and the absurdity of the situation that they found themselves in.

“I encouraged them to smile, laugh and enjoy because it was such a ridiculous situation,” he added.

“It was a matter of trying to put smiles on the guys’ faces to release a bit of tension and they responded brilliantly to that.”
