Cricket umpire hit by ball during match dies after weeks in coma

A respected cricket umpire has died a month after being hit by a cricket ball during a match.

John Williams, 80, was put into an induced coma after being hit by struck on the head by a cricket ball during a match between Pembroke and Narberth on July 13.

Mr Williams, who was one of the longest-serving cricket umpires in west Wales, was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff in a serious condition after the match between Pembroke and Narberth.

Pembrokeshire Cricket Club announced Mr Williams' death on Thursday.

In a statement, it said: "Sad news this morning regarding umpire John Williams. John passed away this morning with his family at his bedside. Thoughts of all of Pembrokeshire Cricket are with Hilary and the boys at this difficult and sad time."

Described as "one of the nicest gentleman in the game," dozens of messages of condolence have been paid on social media.

Neyland Cricket Club said: "Very sad news. A gentleman of the game respected by all. Condolences to all the family from Neyland CC."

St Ishmael's Cricket Club added: "Such sad news, one of the nicest gentlemen in the game. RIP John."

Twitter user Megan Arthur wrote: "Condolences to the Williams family. A lovely gentleman and a great umpire. He will be hugely missed within the cricketing family."
