Cricket season set for further delay with ECB also to discuss cancelling The Hundred

The England and Wales Cricket Board are set to further delay the start of the season.

Already, there has been a halt on cricket starting until May 28 because of the coronavirus crisis — and that looks set to be delayed by up to another month at a board meeting on Thursday.

That would cast further doubt over the series against the West Indies in which England, led by Joe Root, are scheduled to play three Tests, starting at The Oval on June 4.

The ECB are reportedly insured to the tune of £12million for the loss in ticket sales should the series be cancelled, but there is still hope it can be played later in the summer.

The new-look season could be crammed into just two hectic months, depending on the shift in Government guidelines.

The Hundred looks certain to be cancelled, potentially today, with the inaugural series to be put back a year and costing the ECB millions in the process. Also up for debate is the one-day series against Australia, scheduled to take place in July.
