Newcastle cricketer Jason Sangha has notched up a timely 95 in the Sydney first-grade competition ahead of NSW selecting a 15-man squad to travel to South Australia this month for the opening four rounds of the Sheffield Shield.

Sangha, 21, fell five short of a century playing for Belvidere Cup holders Randwick-Petersham against Blacktown at Petersham Oval on Saturday.

His 167-ball knock featured 15 fours and two sixes as the hosts posted 6-362 from 96 overs on day one of the two-day encounter.

Upper Hunter product Riley Ayre finished 37 not out from as many deliveries while Puru Gaur, who joined the club from Wests this season, wasn't required to bat after making his debut in the first round on September 26.

Sangha was one of many players from the Blues squad to take part in round two, highlighted by Matthew Gilkes' 200 for UNSW.

The Blues are scheduled to open their four-day campaign against Victoria on October 22. Sheffield Shield gets underway in Adelaide this Saturday with Queensland meeting Tasmania and the hosts up against Western Australia.

Elsewhere in the Sydney first-grade competition on the weekend and Belmont's Toby Gray scored 47 batting at No.7 for Northern Districts, who made 374.

City all-rounder Dylan Hunter, who has switched clubs from Randwick to Gordon, took 4-85 from 25 overs as hosts Sydney University were dismissed for 286. Hamwicks off-spinner Kain Anderson didn't pick up any wickets for Sydney against Mosman after securing figures of 4-40 on debut in round one.
