Cricket: Lancashire Cup glory for Ormskirk CC as power Rankins perform on the biggest stage

Ormskirk powered to Lancashire Cup glory at Emirates Old Trafford today with a seven-wicket win over Burnley.

The architects were three young brothers – Harvey Rankin, whose leg-spin claimed 3/50 to stop the Burnley innings in its tracks, and his twin Rob and their older brother Alex, whose stand of 134 broke the back of the Love Lane Liverpool Competition side’s chase of 189.

Alex fell nine runs after reaching his half-century, and Rob nine runs shy of his hundred – but skipper Gary Knight was on hand to seal the win with a run-a-ball 28, which ended with successive sixes off South African all-rounder Ockert Erasmus, with 20 balls to spare.

The opening exchanges belonged to Ormskirk’s seam attack, who reduced Burnley to 49/4. Erasmus and Qasim Shah rebuilt with a stand of 71, but Harvey dismissed both – the last six overs from Sam Marsh, Scott Lees and Josh Thompson, who finished with two wickets each, yielded just 27 runs as the tail crumbled.
