Cricket club safeguarding officer admits downloading indecent images of children

Indecent images of children were found on a laptop owned by a pensioner who was safeguarding officer at a village cricket club.

Details were given to city magistrates who decided that a crown court judge should deal with Paul Chambers, 68.

He admitted downloading 14 indecent images of children between October 7 2013 and March 29 of this year. He also pleaded guilty to having 79 pictures of extreme pornography involving animals on March 29.

Anna Pierrepont, prosecuting, told the three JPs that the discovery was made when police officers visited his home in Crofton Road, Attenborough.

"Police received information that he was accessing pornography of an inappropriate nature and he fully accepted that.

"The aggravating feature is that he served in a significant position of trust as a cricket board's safeguarding officer," said Miss Pierrepont.

She told the court that one picture depicted a girl who appeared to be aged 14 to 16.

Chambers had never been in trouble before. The images were in the least serious category.

Nadir Prabatani, mitigating, told the court: "There was full co-operation with the police and he has this association with Attenborough Cricket Club.

"The images were downloaded directly from the internet and the extreme images were due to curiosity.

"He didn't realise these were offences and found them intriguing and laughable."

Mr Prabatani told the court that references have been written on behalf of Chambers, "including from members of Attenborough Cricket Club."

He added: "He has been married a considerable time, 47 years, and is now retired."

A probation report will be compiled on Chambers who was ordered to attend the crown court on December 19.

Presiding magistrate Rex Walker told him: "We have decided to commit this to the crown court on the basis we don't believe our sentencing powers for this incident are sufficient.

"There will be a probation report about you and the offence and it may assist you."
