Crews tackle large hay bale fire which left vehicles burnt out

Firefighters were called to deal with an open fire in Watnall where hay bales had become "well alight".

The crew from Eastwood fire station received the report of an open fire at 6.19am on Thursday, September 26.

Upon arrival at the scene in Long Lane, Watnall, they found "various burnt out vehicles and hay bales well alight".

Two ponies were moved to a safer paddock after hoses were used to protect the surrounding building.

A spokesman for the Eastwood Fire Station posted to Facebook: "Over the course of the day, crews along with the site owner have monitored the bales and allowed them to burn out, this was due to the difficulty of getting large volumes of water to the site."

The bales are being left as a controlled burn for 24 hours due to it being monitored by the site owner.

Pictures below show the fire intensity at the time of firefighters' arrival, then being damped down.
