Crews from across Bristol tackle house fire

Fire crews from across Bristol worked through the night to put out a fire at a house in Brislington.

The fire broke out in the loft space of a detached house in Runswick Road just after 1.15am on Monday morning, January 18.

Crews from Kingswood, Temple, Hicks Gate and Bedminster fire stations rushed to the scene, and at one point firefighters used the aerial appliance to get above the blaze with a hose to help put it out.

Residents were woken by the sound of the fire breaking glass and the fire engines arriving.

"We were woken up at about 1:30 by the fire engines," said one neighbour, who declined to be named.

"We heard banging and breaking glass, I don’t know if they were smashing the windows to get people out or if it was just the fire causing it. Then more and more fire engines just turned up and they set up the crane.

"Luckily it was a detached house so no one else evacuated and no other property damaged, was absolutely nuts though," he added. A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service confirmed no one was injured in the blaze. The first crews arrived to find the fire in the loft space.

"Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels to cut away and extinguish the fire, before damping down the area," she said.

"The turntable ladder was also present and in use as a water tower.

"The cause of the fire is thought to be accidental ignition," she added.
