Crews contain Melbourne factory blaze

Fire crews have brought a blaze at a Melbourne furniture factory under control. (AAP)

A furniture factory fire in the Melbourne suburb of Brunswick is under control after an alert was issued to nearby residents.

The blaze took hold of the factory on Tinning Street early on Tuesday morning with about 60 firefighters deployed to contain it.

A watch and act warning was issued for smoke in the area, with nearby residents advised to close all exterior doors and windows, and ensure heating and cooling systems were turned off.

It has since been downgraded to an advice message after the fire was declared under control at 7.20am.

"There is currently no threat to the community, but you should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions," the Emergency Management Victoria notice said.

Firefighters are working to fully extinguish the blaze, a Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman told AAP.

Tinning Street and parts of Sydney Road remain closed.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
