Crews called to village pub in Oldham after fire breaks out in roof

A village pub in Oldham has been forced to close after a fire broke out in the roof.

Crews were called to The White Lion on Delph Lane in Delph just after 4.20pm on Wednesday.

Images from the scene show several fire engines outside the pub, with what appears to be black smoke coming from the roof of the building.

It is understood the fire started in the chimney before spreading to the rafters and that crews had to remove a section of the roof to extinguish it.

GMFRS said the damage was not thought to be serious.

They added: "We were called at 4.21pm to a fire involving a chimney in the roof area of a commercial building.

"Crews from Mossley, Oldham and Chadderton attended as well as a hydraulic platform from Oldham."

A spokesman for The White Lion confirmed that it would remain closed Wednesday evening and Thursday, but that it would be reopen by the weekend.

Saddleworth North councillor George Hulme praised crews for their efforts.

He tweeted: "Brilliant work by the firefighters of Manchester Fire to stop what could have been a disastrous fire at the White Lion in Delph."
