Crewe fire: 150 elderly residents evacuated as firefighters battle care home fireball

Firefighters are battling to save the homes of those living near a care home which has been engulfed in flames overnight.

A fire ripped through Beechmere residential care home in Crewe yesterday afternoon but firefighters struggled to put out the blaze which is now a raging fireball.

The building, which has been split into several operational sectors, has sustained significant damage and has partially collapsed.

More than 150 elderly residents were evacuated from the residential facility and no one is believed to have been hurt in the incident, Chronicle Live reports.

Dramatic footage shows the flames engulfing the roof of the building as billowing smoke fills the sky in howling winds.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are working in difficult conditions to prevent fire spread to the houses.

Fire crews responded to a report of a fire at around 4pm yesterday, and are working to prevent the blaze spreading to nearby houses into the early hours.

Poynton Fire Station tweeted the video and wrote: "Residents should remain indoors with windows closed."

Over 150 elderly residents were evacuated and re-located in temporary accommodation yesterday evening.

Sars Sofia shared on Twitter: "Absolutely devastated that my family friends are being evacuated now as the wind is getting worse and changing the smoke direction onto adjacent houses!

"They're running out of water and it's been 12 hours."

Emma Louise Hadaway commented on a live video showing the fire rescue: "My sisters nans flat is completely gone."

A spokesperson for Cheshire Police says: "We’d like to thank all those residents who have offered support in re-housing and re-locating the displaced residents.

“The building has received significant damage. There is not considered to be any risk to the wider public, however, residents are being advised to close windows and doors as a precaution."

A 360-degree survey of the site was carried out and firefighters devised a plan of action in terms of the best way to fight it.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue said: "Firefighters remain at the scene of the blaze in Rolls Avenue, Crewe.

"There are currently 16 fire engines in attendance and crews are using hose reel jets, main jets and high volume pumps to tackle the blaze. Two aerial platforms are also being used.

"Road closures remain in place in the local area. Residents living nearby are urged to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

"Any relatives with any concerns can call Cheshire Police on 101 quoting IML 480541."

A number of road closures remain in place that lead to Rolls Avenue, including at Minshull New Road, Bradfield Road, Parkers Road and Underwood Lane.
