Crew to be tested for COVID-19 again before cargo ship departs Townsville coast

An international cargo ship linked to three cases of COVID-19 will undergo another round of testing before it leaves the Townsville coast.

The Globe Electra was forced to dock in Townsville last month after two crew members who were displaying COVID-like symptoms tested positive to coronavirus.

The pair were taken to the Townsville University Hospital for treatment while the ship remained anchored.

Further testing of the crew detected another positive case from an asymptomatic crew member.

On Monday, a Townsville University Hospital spokesperson told the ABC that all crew members in its care had been cleared of COVID-19 and discharged.

Crew will be tested

The general manager of Maritime Safety Queensland, Angus Mitchell, said the crew would be tested again on Tuesday before the ship could continue its voyage to the Abbot Point coal terminal.

"Further testing of the Globe Electra's crew is planned," he said.

"If all return a negative result, the vessel will be rescheduled for berthing at the coal port of Abbot Point, near Bowen in Queensland, pending completion of arrival formalities.

"Maritime Safety Queensland is committed to ensuring the welfare of ship's crew, shoreside workers and the wider community.

"We will continue to work closely with Queensland Health on any decisions following the outcome of testing."

The Globe Electra has been anchored off the Townsville coast for more than two weeks after travelling from Manila.
