Scotland Yard chief Dame Cressida Dick said today that more of her officers will carry Taser stun guns.

The Met Commissioner said the force has about 6,500 Tasers, up from 4,400 when she took up her role in 2017.

A further increase will be announced next month but there are no plans to give all officers a Taser.

She said on LBC: “It is a very powerful bit of kit, it is also potentially a very dangerous bit of kit. You’ve got to be a really good decision-maker, you’ve got to be really fit.”

She has also asked the Government for 6,000 of the additional 20,000 police officers that are due to be recruited over the next three-and-a-half years.

During the broadcast, Dame Cressida said that Boris Johnson giving a political speech in front of West Yorkshire police cadets was “problematic”.

She said: “How it happened I don’t know, but I’m sure everybody wishes it hadn’t.”
