Crematorium to host special service to remember loved ones this Christmas

The Christmas memorial service will return to South Lanarkshire Crematorium this December.

The memorial service offers an opportunity for those who may have experienced bereavement at any time in the past to enjoy the support of others in an atmosphere of seasonal warmth and companionship.

The restrictions resulting from the pandemic meant that last year the event, which has become a very special occasion for many, could not be held.

This year, in recognition that some people will not wish to be in a crowded place but would like to participate in the candle lighting ceremony an extended programme has been planned.

This will allow flexibility over attendance times and reduce the numbers at the crematorium at any given time.

Councillor John Anderson, chairman of community and enterprise resources, said: “We are very pleased to be able to once again offer the crematorium as a place of peace and memory at this special time of year.

“Our bereavement services team has given some time to thinking about how best it might support the memorial service which has always proved well attended in previous years.

"In recognition that for some, and perhaps particularly those in the most vulnerable groups, the thought of a crowd might be off-putting they have developed this alternative format.

“The Christmas memorial will offer a dignified, peaceful and personal way to remember loved ones and our crematorium team will be on hand to offer support if needed.”

The crematorium service room will be open on Sunday, December 5 from 10am until 2pm to allow families and individuals who wish to remember their loved ones to attend on that day at a time of their choosing and, as has been the tradition in past years, a candle can be lit.
