A Creetown man is gearing up for his next African odyssey to help poverty-stricken families in Kenya.
And Eddie McGaw is hoping a psychic night fundraiser for Project Nakuru tomorrow will give his mercy crusade a big boost.
Eddie and fellow volunteers will fly out on a two-week mercy mission to Nakuru on October 4.
The team will be based at the Walk Centre they helped build in the Hilton slum area of the city.
Eddie, who will be making his ninth annual trip to Kenya, told the News: “Nakuru is Kenya’s third biggest city.
“In the dump site area the average wage is £2 a week from recycling rubbish.
“Seventy percent of the kids who come to the Walk Centre have one parent, 20 per cent have two and ten per cent are orphans.
“At the centre they get two meals a day.
“If we can walk away there’s a smile on people’s faces we know we will have done our job.”
Celtic supporter Eddie first travelled to Kenya in 2011 as part of the club’s charity mission there.
The not-for-profit Walk Centre provides children with basic human rights – education, regular meals and the chance of a better life.
Now the race is on to boost the Project Nakura kitty ahead of the trip.
Eddie, who recently celebrated his 51st birthday, said: “We’re aiming to raise as much as we can before we go out.
“Last year we provided 200 food parcels which kept a family going for a month.
“We built houses at the dump site too – they were only sheds but at least they offer protection from the elements.
“We were also able to fund half-way houses for children at the centre.
“That meant that instead of getting kicked out into the street they are still looked after but have their own wee bit of independence too.”
Eddie can’t foretell how much cash will be banked for before departure for Kenya.
But he said: “The psychic night is to raise money – but there’s a wee bit of fun involved as well.”
Tomorrow evening’s show in Creetown Youth Club Hall stars mediums Alan Welsh and Jacqui McGleish and opens at 7.30pm.
