Creetown Celtic Supporters Club members raise cash for Croatian earthquake relief effort

Creetown football fans have dug deep to help rebuild a Croatian maternity hospital wrecked by an earthquake.

Celtic supporters club members helped to raise almost £600 to aid the relief effort in Zagreb.

Organiser Eddie McGaw only found out about the quake through a football friend in the Croatian capital.

It struck on March 22 – the day before the UK went into Covid-19 lockdown – and went largely unreported in the media.

Mr McGaw said: “There’s been close links beween Celtic and Dinamo Zagreb since the teams met in the Europa League in 2014.

“We met up with some Croatian boys when we were over there and have kept in touch ever since.

“One, Matija Furman, asked me if I had heard about the earthquake and the badly damaged hospital.

“There’s a massive campaign to raise money and his fans group the Bad Blue Boys were first to help.”

Eddie, 51, thought a bonus ball prize draw would be a winner.

Local man John “Benny” Burnie donated the prize – a football from last year’s Old Firm league cup final signed by Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

Fans from as far afield as Croatia and Germany bought £10 squares to raise £590 for the appeal.

And despite the international interest it was Creetown man Sam Hannah whose name came out of the hat.

Eddie said: “It was a really great response. Thanks to everyone who donated.”

The 5.3 magnitude tremor was the biggest to hit the city in 140 years.

It left dozens of people injured and major buildings badly damaged including the national parliament and the city cathedral.
