Creepy, derelict old nursing home and RAFA club in Uplands to become 24 new apartments

A former nursing home and armed forces club in Uplands are set to be converted into living accommodation.

The news comes after the former Ffynone Nursing Home and RAFA building in Ffynone Road have been empty for a number of years.

Permission was granted to develop the site after an application was submitted to Swansea Council in 2015 - although one of its conditions was that work should begin within five years.

With the time about to elapse, a fresh application has been submitted to the authority, which is currently being considered.

If approved, it will allow for the demolition of sections of the existing buildings to facilitate side and link extensions, and conversion of the remaining buildings to create 24 apartments.

In addition, the application also proposes construction of a pair of detached two-storey 'coach houses' to provide eight apartments, with associated landscaping and car parking provision.

The site is in the Ffynone and Uplands Conservation Area, which aims to preserve the location's architectural and historical value.

Uplands councillor Peter May said: "This space has been empty for an incredibly long time.

"I remember the original agenda was on one of my very first planning meetings back in July, 2004, and it's been rattling on ever since then. It's almost been a generation.

"I'd hope the committee approve the application because we want to see something there, and this application does incorporate the original structure.

"I've sympathy too because sometimes permission is granted but then there is not the money or wherewithal to see it through".
