Credit card and overdraft payment holidays are changing

Under new rules set out by the regulator, banks and building societies will have to let people skip payments on credit cards and extend 0% overdrafts until October.

Under the plans, those who yet to request an arranged interest-free overdraft of up to £500 or a payment freeze will also be able to do so until 31 October 2020.

If you've already used a payment holiday but are still experiencing difficulties because of coronavirus, you'll receive support for three extra months.

Speaking about the changes, FCA interim chief executive Christopher Woolard said: "The proposals we’ve announced today would provide an expected minimum level of financial support for consumers who remain in, or enter, temporary financial difficulty due to coronavirus.

"Where consumers can afford to make payments, it is in their best long-term interest to do so, but for those who need help, it will be there."

According to the Mirror, banks have until 5pm on Monday to respond to the proposals, which look set to become firm rules very shortly after that.
