Crean: Anthony Edwards “doesn’t have an idea of how good he can be”

Appearing before a group of media members during SEC Media Days held in Birmingham, UGA men’s head basketball coach Tom Crean offered praise for highly-touted freshman Anthony Edwards, who arrived in Athens as the number two high school recruit in his class.

Edwards has already been named to a preseason all-conference team without having officially suited up for the Dawgs.

Crean focused on the freshman’s potential, stating the eighteen-year-old out of Atlanta “can be not only an outstanding offensive player, he can be an elite defensive player” as well.

The head coach added that Edwards “doesn’t even really have an idea of how fast he is, how good he can be.”

The Dawgs are currently projected to finish ninth in SEC play during the 2019-2020 season. Anthony Edwards may want to add a word, but Tom Crean didn’t express worry over preseason predictions.

“I’ve never really put in a lot of time and thought on that, even with teams that were picked [to finish the season] high.”

Crean’s Bulldogs officially begin the preseason with an exhibition game against Valdosta State at Stegeman Coliseum this Friday before a second at UNC-Charlotte one week later. The first competition of the regular season is Tuesday, November 5 when the Dawgs welcome Western Carolina University to Athens.
