Crazed armed criminal leads gardai on day-long car chase across Ireland

A crazed armed criminal led cops on a nationwide chase as he threatened to kill gardai.

During his chaotic pursuit the man told officers he would kill them before crashing in to a Garda station. As the day-long chase ended, officers frantically warned their colleagues in the barracks to take cover.

The man, from Limerick, was later taken into custody by armed detectives.

A source said he was being hunted by gardai for more than a week in connection with violent crime in the city. They added: “This man is a super violent criminal and has access to weapons.

“There was a distinct fear he could use them so gardai had to put a job together on him.

“A few days before that he had spent time in the company of two men and this led gardai to a particular location and he took flight.” A chase ensued on Friday as the thug raced through Cork, Kerry and parts of Tipperary.

At some point he was spotted in Limerick city and members of the heavily armed Regional Support Unit gave chase.

They pursued him towards Roxboro Road Garda station where, with guns drawn, they arrested him after he smashed into a barrier at the barracks.

A source added: “This was a very fraught situation, gardai were roaring to their unarmed colleagues to duck for cover, there was strong information he had a gun.

Investigations into the incident are continuing.
