Crashed lorry is left hanging over pedestrian underpass just yards from primary school at home time

Police are investigating after a lorry crashed off a main road and onto a pavement just before children were due to leave a nearby primary school.

The heavy goods vehicle left the A4120 - a main road in and out of Aberystwyth in Ceredigion - shortly after 3.20pm on Monday.

One of the lorry’s front wheels crashed through wooden fencing at the side of the carriageway and was left hanging over an underpass which allows people to cross from one side of the busy road to another.

Police arrived at the scene shortly after 3.25pm and closed the road in both directions as there was fuel leaking from the lorry.

The road remained closed for several hours as recovery was arranged, reopening shortly before 10.30pm.

Fire crews were also called to the scene, along with officers from Ceredigion Council.

The pavement at the side of the road, as well as the underpass beneath the A4120, is frequently used by parents and young children, being only a stone’s throw away from local primary school, Ysgol Llwyn yr Eos.

A spokesman for the Ceredigion Road Policing Unit admitted it was “lucky that no pushchairs or children were using it” at the time, and added that police were now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Traffic was affected in the area throughout Monday afternoon and into Monday night as diversions were put in place, but police confirmed that there were no injuries suffered as a result of the crash.
