Crash on M80 at Cumbernauld sees police shut down motorway as traffic held

A bad crash has led to the closure of the M80 during rush hour.

Police shut down a northbound stretch of the motorway following the collision with traffic being held.

The incident, reported by INRIX as a multi-vehicle accident, appears to have taken place at Junction 5 at Auchenkilns, near Condorrat, on approach to Cumbernauld.

Traffic Scotland confirmed the incident shortly before 8am this morning.

One of the two lanes has now reopened.

Traffic Scotland's latest update advises: "#M80 Auchenkilns Lane 1 (of 2) has now reopened at junction 5 following an RTC.

"All lanes running

"Traffic remains heavy back to J3 with ~15 min delays"

The road is particularly busy at this time in the morning as commuters head north from Glasgow.

UPDATE: A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 7.45 am on Tuesday, 11 January, 2022, police received a report of a three vehicle road crash on the M80 at junction 5 northbound near Auchenkilns.

“Emergency services attended and the road was closed for a short time to allow the vehicles to be removed.

“There were no reports of any injuries.”
