Eleven people were hurt when a song thaew and a car collided on a road to Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai province on Friday.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Provincial Office said the hired song thaew was carrying tourists from Songkhla province and the  car held two Chinese tourists.

The red song thaew was returning from a trip to the famous temple and the driver was trying to overtake another vehicle and hit the oncoming car, which was taking the Chinese visitors to Doi Suthep.

The collision injured 11 people and all were taken to Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital of Chiang Mai University. They sustained minor injuries, the report said. The injured were not named.

The Thai passengers were with a group of local officials from Chana district in Songkhla province travelling in about 10 song thaew on a tour to the North.

The song thaew driver, Sompong Kaewprapa, said he decided to overtake the vehicle in front after an advance car travelling with them radioed that the road ahead was clear of oncoming vehicles, according to Thairath Online.
