EMERGENCY services were called to a crash at a notorious turn-off on the Pacific Highway on Monday.
The incident occurred about 11.20am at the intersection of Cams Wharf Road and Flowers Drive at Catherine Hill Bay. Three cars had collided, leaving one person believed to be in her 70s, trapped inside one of the vehicles.
Four ambulance crews, police and NSW Fire and Rescue were sent to the scene and the road was closed while rescuers worked to free the woman.
"One female was trapped by confinement but responding well," a NSW Fire and Rescue spokesman said.
"We had to remove the door to get her out.
"Two other females were passengers in the vehicle but managed to extricate themselves."
The trapped woman suffered a wrist injury and spinal tenderness. She was transferred to hospital in a stable condition.
A further three people were taken to John Hunter Hospital by ambulance suffering from minor injuries.
It was a lucky outcome at what has become a notorious spot for serious crashes, some of which have been fatal.
In August 2019 one person was killed and three people were hospitalised when a Honda sedan travelling north and a BMW sedan travelling south collided. The following year Lake Macquarie councillor John Gilbert publicly called for traffic lights to be installed at the intersection which he described as a "proven death-trap".
State crash data shows there were five crashes at the intersection in the five years to September 2018.
