Crash and burn: cop admits threat over Top Gun spoiler

A police officer has admitted pointing his gun at and threatening to shoot a colleague over spoilers for the latest Top Gun blockbuster.

Constable Dominic Gaynor, 30, pleaded guilty on Thursday to carrying a firearm in a manner likely to injure a person in the May 2022 incident at a Sydney city-centre police station.

Several other charges against him were dropped, including a charge of common assault and two counts of stalking or intimidating.

Gaynor was on duty behind the front desk of Day St police station, in Chinatown,  when a younger officer began discussing Top Gun: Maverick, which he had seen the night before.

Gaynor told him not to ruin the movie, to which the other officer, Morgan Royston, replied: "I'll spoil it for you."

According to court documents, the older officer responded: "Don't spoil the movie, c***."

Gaynor then threatened to shoot Royston, while another officer who was taking a call told him: "Gaynor, don't say that, I am on the phone."

Again laughing, Gaynor took his Glock out of its holster and pointed it towards Royston for around five seconds without his finger on the trigger.

Royston froze and didn't know what to do, the tendered police statement said.

He reported the incident to a supervising officer around a week later.

According to the NSW Police handbook, which Gaynor accepted he was aware of, police should treat all firearms as if they are loaded and be conscious of where the muzzle is pointed at all times.

The case has been listed for sentence on November 9.
